baby Development: 1-2 Year Old Babies

In this article we discuss development of 1 – 2 year old babies.

The most obvious change in babies development for this age group is of course finally being able to walk. Shortly after babies reach 12 months of age they will start walking. They walk with a big space between their feet, while arms and legs are kept stiff. The balance isn’t very good but improving day by day.

Baby Development: Playing with building blocks

The baby is constantly falling down but nothing stops them at this stage. If they fall they just stand up and try again.

After babies reach 2 years of age all motions are much smoother and coordinated. They have good balance when walking and some are even running around. That’s why 2 year olds love to play chasing games. ‘Just try to catch me … I can run really, really fast‘.

Babies love to climb. They climb up on chairs, tables, stairs and window sills.

The grasp is still developing. The pincer grasp between index finger and thumb starts getting very firm. Babies exercise the art of releasing objects at the right time by stacking blocks. At 2 years of age the baby is capable of stacking 4 – 6 blocks on top of each other.

At this stage babies enjoy pushing chairs and boxes around. They can walk up and down stairs if someone is holding their hand. After 20-21 months the baby can walk up and down the stairs with just a little support and a 2 year old can walk up the stairs with out support, taking one step at a time.

When babies start reaching out for spoons and show desire to feed on their own, their parents need to respect that. It doens’t matter if most of the food ends up somewhere else then in the babies mouth. Feeding with a spoon is a good fine movement exercise and part of your babies development.

It can be useful to let the baby hold onto one spoon while the parent helps with feeding with a different spoon. 18 month old baby should be able to control the spoon without most of the food hitting the floor.

After babies learn to walk they have a lot of interest in gaining knowledge and experience on every single detail. Babies have a great need to touch, hold and feel everything they see. This is why it’s so important to keep all things out of reach which can harm the baby.

At this age babies love to get projects. Send them on easy missions such as getting the daily paper, shoes or a ball. Two year old babies like to help with preparing the dinner table, baking, cleaning and imitate what grown ups are doing with great pride.

Twelve month old babies communicate with their peers of same age as they are just another toy or an object. They crawl over them, hit them on the head and bite them while doing a thorough examination. When babies are a bit older, 20-24 month old, they start playing with each other.
